Amazing Birds

When I was in 9th grade, I had the flu. Not the sneezy, coughing, stomach malaise that we often confuse with the real flu; I had influenza. I ended up in the hospital with dehydration. I don’t remember a whole lot about those few days, but I do remember my aunt coming to visit me. I was 13, so my aunt was 27. And she brought me the best get well gift ever: a coloring book and crayons. Now don’t get me wrong, at 13 I am sure I was far too cool to be coloring, but I did it. I did it because my aunt was far cooler than I was, and if she was coloring, then it had to be okay. I had such a fun time coloring, and my aunt and I have colored together ever since then.

Fast forward thirty years, and I still love to color. What I enjoy coloring today, though, has changed, because I am an adult. And thankfully, we have so many more options as adults today than we had when I was a teenager. We no longer have to rely on coloring books of cartoon characters and superheroes. Someone realized how cathartic and relaxing it is to color, and people started designing coloring books for adults. My new favorite is Amazing Birds: Adult Coloring Book (Beautiful Designs for Relaxation and Calm 1) by Tali Carmi.

The reason I enjoy Amazing Birds is because of the designs: they are perfect for the way that I like to color. There are not a million tiny little areas that need to be colored in, but the designs are detailed and beautiful. There are bold lines and background designs that complement each image of a bird. I also enjoy reading the facts that she includes about each bird. The artwork is truly exquisite, and I love the realism combined with whimsy that the artist creates.

When I color, I usually use watercolor pencils. They are colored pencils that you fill in the design with, and then you use a paintbrush and a small amount of water to wet the image, and the pencil is specially created to work like watercolor paints. I prefer the pencils over paint because I feel like I have more control, but when they are finished they make the image beautiful. I also will use markers sometimes, on bolder designs, but the watercolor pencils are perfect for the designs in Amazing Birds.

Now that adults have remembered how fun and relaxing coloring is, you can find an endless supply of books out there to cater to the new hobby. I highly recommend you check out Amazing Birds: Adult Coloring Book (Beautiful Designs for Relaxation and Calm 1) and add it to your collection. The lovely images will brighten your day as you color, and you will end up with pretty pictures and a serene mind when you are finished.
